This piece is called نانو اور دادو (Naano and Daado). In Urdu, Naani is the term for one’s maternal grandmother, while Daadi is the term for one’s paternal grandmother. The reason they are called Naano and Daado is because it is meant to be said as a term of endearment; another way of calling them in a familiar, loving way. I have never met either of them, but I love them very much, and that is quite an odd feeling in itself. How do I reach out to the unreachable? My goal of this project was to create a devotional piece that could reach them. Knowing they both passed away before I was born, they never got to see anything better than the lives they knew, so I wanted to spotlight them and place them in an established institution, giving them the space they have always deserved as women who worked so hard until they died.
